Institution and All Departments of STIP Jakarta Accreditation Process for “A” Accreditation.

(03/01) Recently, the alumni have come to STIP as their almamater not only to meet their junior or their previous lecturers, but also to get the information of the campus accreditation. This information is very important because some companies they are working at will need the accreditation information as the one of indicators of the applicant’s quality.

One of the criteria the “A” accreditation is the quality of lecturers, instructors, and research development. Accreditation is one of external quality assurance system, that is a process used in an institution to give formal recognition that an institution has ability in running the specific activity. This activity will be started by doing the self evaluation toward some components from input, process, and higher education products which conduct the department. Then the institution will send the report to the asessor institution.

Next, based on the evaluation report, the asessor institution will send some questions (borang) that have to be filled. Based on the answer filled in the questions form (borang) the asessor institution will visit the campus as validation action. In other words, accreditation is same as status and process. Status here refers to the higher education institution that conduct the department accredited has required the quality standard, while Process here means the process of academic activity has met the quality standard and able to improve continuously by doing self evaluation.

Accreditation is government’s attempt to standardize and guarantee the quality of the higher education institution graduates. This process of accreditation is conducted by BAN-PT (the national board of higher education institution accreditation), it consists of two accreditation, they are Department Accreditation and Higher Educatition Institution Accreditation.

Imagine that we see a ship, accreditation is like a roadworthy certificate. This letter is issued by a quality assurance board. If the ship has this certificate then she can be produced not only in local area but also international area.

BAN-PT is an institution that has authority to evaluate and rate, and decide the status and quality rank based the assigned quality standard.

The goal and benefit of accreditation.

  1. Giving the guarantee that the accredited department has met the requirement of quality standard assigned by BAN-PT, refers to Peraturan Pemerintah No 19 Tahun 2005 about National Education Standard, so that it can give protection to the society from unqualified department.
  2. Motivating the department to make improvement continually and maintain the good quality.
  3. The result of accreditation can be used for consideration in transferring higher education credit, fund donation, and recognition from other institutions.

The department quality is a representation from situation and input, process, output, result, effect or the service performance characteristics of department measured by some assigned standards.

The department accreditation appraisal is based on 7 standards, they are:

  1. Vision, Mission, Objectives, target and achievement strategy.
  2. Governance, leadership, management system, and quality assurance from BAN-PT.
  3. Students and graduates, this can be seen from quesioner from the graduates, GPA (IPK), and students recruitment.
  4. Human resources such as the number of lecturers, lecturers’ qualification, and lecturers’ development.
  5. Curriculum, learning and academic atmosphere.
  6. Funding, facilities, and information system.
  7. Research (Journals, scientific work, etc) and service and dedication to society.

Next, the final score (scale 0=400) is divided in A accreditation level with the final score 361-400, B accreditation 301-360, C accreditation 201-300. In order to issue the certification, a department must be minimal C accredited.

Accreditation for University/Higher Education Institution is like a soul. The other benefit of accreditation is that, for those who have graduated from the campus and want to be a Civil Servant (PNS), some institutions make accreditation level as one of the requirements. Even, some private instutitions have the requirements related to the level of accreditation. They ask for minimum B Accreditation for the applicants. There are many institutions require the applicants are from A Accredited University, while Regional Government usually requires applicants from minimum B accredited University. Even the applicants are from state university if the accreditation level is C, they can’t apply the job in Regional Department.

In UU No 12/2012 about Higher Education, starts from August 10th, the certificate is considered as legal if they are issued by accredited campus. If the campus is already accredited but the certificate is illegal (fake), then it is not valid. We have to know this new regulation” said the Head of BAN-PT, Mansyur Ramli, as quoted from JPPN (10 Agustus 2014, Institusi dan Prodi Wajib Terakreditasi).

STIP has 3 departments, they are Nautical, Technical, and Port and Shipping Department. These three departments has already got the “A” Accreditation. This refers to:

SK nomor: 261/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/Dpl-IV/VII/2014 for Nautical Department Program Score 361 Level “A” dan Valid until 23 July 2019.

  1. SK nomor: 092/SK/BAN-PT/Ak-SURV/Dpl-IV/III/2015 for Tehnical Department score 377 level “A” valid until 23 July 2019.
  2. SK nomor: 181/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/Dpl-IV/VI/2014 for Port and Shipping Department level “A” and valid until 27 June 2019.

In the beginning of 2017, STIP has achieved Institution Accreditation/Akreditasi Lembaga (AIPT) level “A” as stated in SK nomor: 3005/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/PT/XII/2016 Tanggal 20 Desember 2016 and will be valid until 20 December 2021. STIP is state campus under BPSDM Perhubungan (Ministry of Transports) and the only campus under Minister of Transports that has already got the Institution Accreditation, it means that STIP is same level as 27 state univeristies, 15 private univesities and  3 campus in other ministry who has already got the A Accreditation from 3000 Higher Education Istitutions in Indonesia.

By STIP’s participation as official campus which always maintains the quality by involving in educational quality assurance and standardized, it is hoped that STIP can be an institutions which educate the human resource as world wide qualified sea commerce officials and Experts in Port and Shipping
